How can we design in times of scarcity and uncertainty? This talk calls for a profound shift in the way we design and build – a shift that sometimes involves working backwards. Building on their ongoing collaboration on the public project for a new Recypark and Donnerie site in Brussels, Belgium, Alice Babini, Raf Geysen and Tiphaine Abenia will share their approach to radical circularity, the fusion of research and practice.
Designing for reuse within local material flows begins with the existing condition of a spatial element or building component and reinterprets it through alternative visions. This process explores new narratives, shaped by reciprocal acts of construction and deconstruction, an understanding of structure as an open and capable support system, and extended collaborations.
BABINI GEYSEN is an architecture practice based in Brussels that explores architectural design within the context of an uncertain future. Whether dealing with large-scale public spaces or private environments, their work aims to renegotiate the future naturalisation and reprogramming of the built environment through design. In every project, they seek to challenge traditional building disciplines by experimenting with a more natural way of building and living, achieving major changes with minimal resources.
Tiphaine Abenia is an architect, researcher and lecturer at the La Cambre-Horta School of Architecture at the Université libre de Bruxelles. There, she coordinates the Chair in Constructive Cultures, which aims to rethink our design and construction systems from a non-extractivist perspective.
Series
Presented by architects and lecturers Anne Klépal and Philippe Vander Maren, the Tuesday Lectures series About authorship & collaborations explores architecture as a collective and transdisciplinary practice, where hybridisation and multiple collaborations profoundly redefine the making of the project and the ways in which we inhabit the world.
